After the first national lockdown, primary schools opened again in May 2020 and the children were able to go back to school. The reopening was subject to conditions however, and schools, children and parents were expected to adhere to the guidelines issued by the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and Environmental Protection).
A modified wayfinding had to be devised for the reopening of OBS de Westwijzer, a large primary school with double classes, double the number of classrooms and a total of around 500 pupils. Split into 16 classes, the 500 pupils had to be divided up among three entrances and two time slots in order to enter the school. This regulated the flow of pupils in the school.
The goal of the temporary COVID wayfinding was to make clear that the parents were no longer allowed to enter the school, all the children (including even the youngest, with an average age of four) had to assemble at the designated locations, after which they would be led inside by their teacher.
Role in the project
Signshop Amsterdam was asked to create a plan for the temporary COVID wayfinding on the basis of the RIVM guidelines and the new ‘one-and-a-half metre society’. One important guiding principle was the clear formulation and design of the proper instructions. The design had to be crystal-clear for children, parents, teachers and visitors.
Wayfinding for entering and leaving the schoolyard, posters with reminders of the COVID rules, area designation for the classes and temporary safety cones with wayfinding guiding people to the meeting points became part of the plan.
Drawing up the plan, working out the designs, producing the various items and applying the wayfinding indications on location were all achieved within a very short period of time and in a cost-effective manner.
